April 2011
After a while you learn the subtle difference
between holding a hand and chaining a soul.
You learn that kisses aren’t contracts
and presents aren’t promises.
You learn that loving doesn’t mean leaning
and company doesn’t always mean security,
and you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much.
After a while you learn to build all your dreams on today
because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for dreams,
and futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.
After a while you learn to accept your defeats
with your head held with the grace of a woman
and not the grief of a child.
After a while you learn to plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone else to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really are strong,
that you really do have self worth
and you can endure,
and you learn and learn,
with every ‘goodbye’ you learn.

“Later that day I got to thinking about relationships. There are those that open you up to something new and exotic, those that are old and familiar, those that bring up lots of questions, those that bring you somewhere unexpected, those that bring you far from where you started, and those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you you love, well, that’s just fabulous.” -Carrie Bradshaw (SATC)
